If you have ever thought about traveling solo but felt unsure where to begin, you are not alone. When I took my first solo trip at 38, I had the same mix of excitement and nerves that many first time solo travelers feel. I kept wondering if I would feel awkward eating alone, if I would get lost, or if people would think it was strange that I was traveling by myself.

What I discovered instead was freedom. I realized that the right destination can make your first solo trip feel empowering rather than overwhelming. Some places simply make it easier to travel alone. They feel welcoming, safe, easy to navigate, and full of experiences that are just as enjoyable solo as they are with company.

If you are dreaming about your first solo adventure, these destinations are wonderful places to start.

1. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona feels like it was made for solo travelers who want both beauty and reflection. The red rock landscapes are stunning in every direction and the hiking trails are easy to explore at your own pace. It is one of those places where being alone never feels lonely. You can spend your mornings hiking among the red cliffs, your afternoons wandering through art galleries, and your evenings watching the sunset paint the rocks in shades of orange and gold.

2. Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is one of the most charming cities in the United States and it feels incredibly welcoming for solo travelers. The historic squares, moss covered oak trees, and walkable streets make it easy to explore without feeling rushed. I always think Savannah is perfect for wandering without a plan. Grab a coffee, stroll through the historic district, and let yourself discover hidden courtyards, beautiful architecture, and quiet parks along the way.

3. San Diego, California

San Diego is one of those cities where everything feels relaxed and easy. The weather is almost always perfect and the beaches stretch for miles. As a solo traveler you can spend the day exploring coastal neighborhoods, visiting Balboa Park, or simply sitting by the ocean watching the waves roll in. It is the kind of place where no one questions someone enjoying their own company.

4. Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland consistently ranks as one of the safest countries in the world, which makes Reykjavik a fantastic first international destination for solo travelers. The city itself is small and easy to navigate, and many incredible natural wonders are just a short drive away. Solo travelers often join day tours to waterfalls, glaciers, and the famous Blue Lagoon, which makes it easy to meet people if you want company during your adventures.

5. Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston has a warmth that makes solo travelers feel instantly welcome. The colorful historic homes, charming streets, and waterfront views make exploring the city feel almost magical. I love places where you can spend hours simply walking and Charleston is perfect for that. Stop into small cafes, browse local shops, and take in the slow southern pace that makes the city so relaxing.

6. Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver is an ideal destination for travelers who love both city life and outdoor adventure. One moment you can be exploring lively neighborhoods filled with restaurants and markets, and the next you can be walking along the ocean or hiking through forests. It feels incredibly safe and organized, which makes it easy for beginner solo travelers to feel confident navigating the city. I also 100% recommend going on a whale watching tour out of Vancouver!

7. Paris, France

Paris may seem like a bold choice for a first solo trip, but it can actually be a beautiful place to travel alone. Paris is where I actually took my first solo trip. There is something special about sitting at a café table with a pastry and watching the world go by. The museums, gardens, and historic streets offer endless ways to fill your days. Paris also has an incredible public transportation system that makes getting around surprisingly easy.

8. Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto offers a peaceful and deeply cultural solo travel experience. The city is known for its temples, gardens, and traditional streets lined with wooden buildings. Many travelers describe Japan as one of the safest and most respectful countries they have ever visited, which can help first time solo travelers feel comfortable. Walking through quiet temple grounds or bamboo forests can feel almost meditative.

9. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon has quickly become one of Europe’s most loved travel destinations and it is wonderful for solo travelers. The city is known for its colorful streets, historic trams, and incredible viewpoints overlooking the water. It has a laid back energy that makes it easy to relax and enjoy the moment. Many travelers also find Portugal to be one of the friendliest countries in Europe.

10. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is easy to explore and full of character. The canals, bridges, and narrow historic buildings create a beautiful setting for wandering. Renting a bike or taking a canal cruise are great ways to see the city, and the museums offer endless inspiration. Solo travelers often say Amsterdam feels welcoming and comfortable, even for those traveling alone for the first time.

11. Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada

If your ideal solo trip involves nature and fresh mountain air, Lake Tahoe is a perfect choice. The lake is stunning in every season and there are endless opportunities for hiking, kayaking, and simply enjoying the scenery. Being surrounded by nature can make solo travel feel peaceful and grounding.

12. New York City, New York

New York City might seem overwhelming at first, but it is actually one of the easiest places to travel solo. And I have done it myself a few times (there is so much to see and do there!). Millions of people are constantly moving through the city, which means no one thinks twice about someone dining or exploring alone. Museums, Broadway shows, parks, and neighborhoods offer endless things to do, and the subway makes getting around simple.

13. Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh feels like stepping into a storybook. The historic streets, castle views, and cozy pubs create a magical atmosphere that is perfect for solo exploration. Walking along the Royal Mile or hiking up Arthur’s Seat gives you incredible views of the city. It is also a place where locals tend to be friendly and happy to chat with visitors. I will be going to Edinburgh for the first time later this year and will report back on how amazing it truly is for solo travelers!

14. Banff, Canada

Banff is one of the most breathtaking destinations in North America. Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, the turquoise lakes and towering peaks feel almost unreal. Solo travelers often find that national park destinations make it easy to focus on the experience rather than worrying about being alone.

15. Florence, Italy

Florence is a dream destination for travelers who love art, history, and beautiful food. The city is compact and walkable, which makes it ideal for exploring solo. You can spend your days visiting famous museums, climbing to scenic viewpoints, and enjoying long Italian meals while soaking in the atmosphere of the city.

Final Thoughts on Solo Travel for Beginners

Starting your solo travel journey later in life can feel both thrilling and intimidating. I understand that feeling because I started my own solo adventures at 38. What I discovered is that the world becomes much bigger and more welcoming once you take that first step.

The truth is there is no perfect time to begin traveling alone. The best time is simply when you decide you are ready. Choosing the right destination can make that first trip feel empowering instead of overwhelming, and these places offer some of the best experiences for beginner solo travelers.

Your first solo trip may feel a little scary at first, but it might also change the way you see the world and yourself.
